sprouting greens - Spring Equinox News 🌞🌛

Hello Farm Friends,

Happy Spring!

Last year at this time it was so warm and dry I was planting peas and carrots in the field. This year, with the amount of snow we had I knew it was going to be a much muddier start to the season, and to be fair a much more typical Spring. The kind of Spring where I wish I had a heated greenhouse and three more hoophouses!

However, until I build those things, I will try to be content filling the one I do have to the brim and patiently waiting a little longer to get anything planted out in the field. Thankfully, despite the rainy weather outside our first little sprouts inside have indeed popped up their little heads looking for that Spring sunshine and this morning the birds were letting me know that the wait won’t be too much longer.

If you are ever feeling blue at this time of year, I highly recommend going for a stroll somewhere where the birds are returning, I really believe that it’s almost impossible not to be cheered by the bird song of Spring.

This week I have also plugged in our heat table and begun to seed the first of our many transplanted crops. Onions and leeks are some of the first to be started, along with peppers, eggplants, and the tomatoes that will be planted into our hoop house. Parsley, beets and celeriac were also started extra early along with lots of lettuce, kale and chard!

Nothing better than seeding in a 30 degree hoop house to get me excited for the season ahead. I hope thinking about all those little seedlings gathering strength makes you excited too.

Speaking of excitement, our three prize winners have been drawn! I will email the winners separately to figure out getting you your prizes, so please watch out for that.

Thanks to everyone who signed up and paid for their veggies early, there was such a strong response this year I’ve barely had to think about advertising, which is my least favourite thing to think about. That said, if you know of someone who might be interested, we do have room for a few more members. We have also had quite a few donations, so if you know of a family or organization that would benefit from a subsidized share please send them my way.

Sincerely,
— Jenny
